[Do you have] Ideas for teaching vocabulary to children with dyslexia [and] teaching comprehension strategies? [Do you know a] good book to read for a reading specialist to help my special ed teachers to support these children?
To help your students develop vocabulary , you might try some webbing of words. There are several types of webs you might introduce. (Semantic webs, Derivative webs, or Multiple Meaning webs) For example, when doing a semantic web, you would lead your students to understand the “target word” by discussion of word meaning and usage in the sentence (part of speech). Students are then asked to generate related synonyms and antonyms and conclude web activity by having students create sentences using the new target word. Derivative webs and Multiple meaning webs would be done a little differently. To learn more about teaching vocabulary and comprehension skills, our Developing Metacognitive Skills workshop might be of interest to you.
