SMU Master of Education in Reading and Writing

The Master of Education in Reading and Writing is an excellent opportunity to become an expert in the field of literacy. Southern Mehodist University, in partnership with Neuhaus Education Center is beginning their third cohort of students in Dallas and Houston beginning in June, 2011. The program prepares teachers for response to intervention (RTI), a school model which requires teachers to be interventionists in reading with students who struggle. Those who obtain the master’s degree in education will be eligible to sit for the Texas Reading Specialist exam and the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) Teaching Level exam. Once certified as a Texas Reading Specialist, candidates are qualified to apply for master reading teacher (MRT) certification. Students enrolled in Houston attend classes at Neuhaus Education Center, 4433 Bissonnet, Houston, Texas 77401. Professors of record at the Neuhaus campus are Dr. Suzanne Carreker, vice president of research and programs, and Barbara T. Conway, manager of university partnerships.
